A Conversation with Matthew Ingate

In his 2015 MusiCares speech, Bob Dylan acknowledged the “long road” his songs took to get “here,” citing the artists and traditions that influenced him and his songwriting. Dylan pulls this thread through in his June 2017 Nobel lecture, giving credit to his influences and arguably acknowledging his songs’ place within the canon of American music and literature. In this episode, author and music writer Matthew Ingate and I talk about his book, Together Through Life: My Never Ending Tour with Bob Dylan and Dylan’s deep roots in and connections to American music, history, and culture through the songs he’s written, the songs he has covered, and his live performances. Matthew also shares his thoughts on artists who have covered Dylan’s songs, the diverse approaches those of us who write about Dylan take, and the great work being written and produced across Dylanworld.
