What a great interview! I love to hear you talking about poetry, Emma. Erin is right about how wonderful your opening lines are in "No Happy Endings." The image of a resurrected woman with the taste of dirt still in her mouth feels like Persephone meeting Lady Lazarus in the Lowlands and convincing the Sad-Eyed Lady to open her gate and bust out of hell. I also like to imagine an echo of Townes Van Zandt: "The dust that Pancho bit down south / Ended up in Lefty's mouth." I am eager to hear your duets album and your Lou Reed covers. I dove deep into Suzanne Vega's connections with Leonard Cohen, Lou Reed, and Bob Dylan recently on my site and can't wait to hear where you take Lou's songs. Sounds like you're into art galleries, too, so I'd highly recommend checking out the Cincinnati Art Museum when you're in town. If you want a hometown tour, look me up! So much fun and enlightenment. I loved hearing Emma's references to the poets and writers and singers (Sandy Denny!) she learns from and admires. And this: Her entry to Dylan was Traveling Wilburys. Jaw-dropping, but lovely. I heard several of her new songs in a recent house concert in Kansas City (plus Visions of Johanna, along with Queen Jane and Multitudes) and looking forward to the new record. And the others in the Emma pipeline; I didn't know about the duo record with Robyn. Great job, Erin.
